Regenerative braking technology is a bliss for the efficiency of <a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">all-electric vehicles</a>. But it takes time to get used to this helpful feature. Sometimes it gets annoying or makes no sense on some occasions. There is an option to turn it off, but things get complicated with <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold">Tesla vehicles</a>. Let us explain.
If you want to turn off regenerative braking on your Tesla, you probably won&#8217;t find any disabling option in the menu. Because turning off regenerative braking is not possible on a Tesla. It is also impossible to adjust the regen on Tesla vehicles built since Q2 2020. Tesla Model S/3/X/Y vehicles built before that date can still be able to offer adjustments. You just need to navigate through the main screen and go to Driving, then change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; to &#8216;Low&#8217; for reducing the level of regenerative braking.
Newer Tesla vehicles come with standard level regen as default. There is no &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; adjustment option anymore. So, why wouldn&#8217;t Tesla allow its drivers to adjust regenerative braking? The main reason is that the vehicle range is heavily affected by not being able to recuperate the energy you otherwise lost to heat, etc by pressing the brake pedal. Other automakers agree with Tesla as well. According to <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://electrek.co/2018/08/08/audi-e-tron-quattro-electric-suv-range-regen-braking/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Audi</a>, regenerative braking can extend the range by up to 30% on average. Soon, every new electric vehicle on the market will probably remove the option to adjust regenerative braking for the sake of efficiency.

If you drive a Tesla vehicle built before Q2 2022, your car&#8217;s main screen comes with an option to adjust regenerative braking. You just need to go to settings, then select the &#8216;Driving&#8217; menu from the left and change the &#8216;Regenerative Braking&#8217; option to &#8216;Low&#8217; for partially turning off the regen.
You won&#8217;t be able to turn off this feature. There is, however, a way to heavily limit the effects of regen braking. Here&#8217;s how:
<h3>Why Does Regenerative Braking Limited on My Tesla?</h3>
If you live in a cold area or your battery is fully charged, your Tesla vehicle would warn you about the regenerative braking is being limited. That&#8217;s because the battery is unable to receive the energy from the regen system and the battery&#8217;s management system temporarily turns off the regenerative braking feature. It might take up to half an hour for your vehicle to recover from that. In order to reduce the negative effects of this limitation, you can enable an extra feature for automatically applying the brake pedals instead of regen braking. Just go to Controls &gt; Pedals &amp; Steering, then turn on the &#8216;Apply Brakes When Regenerative Braking is Limited&#8217; option.
<h3>Does Regenerative Braking Work on Icy/Snowy Roads?</h3>
Not being able to turn off regenerative braking might sound dangerous on icy/snowy roads, but Tesla has a solution for this. In 2022, Tesla adjusted the traction control software of its vehicles and added a hidden snow mode. Its main function is to better handle regen braking adjustments on icy roads and snow. How to Turn Off Regenerative Braking on a Tesla?

If you want to play games with an Xbox controller on your Tesla, use a data cable (not a charge-only USB cable that lacks the data transfer function) to plug your controller into your Tesla Model 3/Y&#8217;s main screen via the USB-C ports in the center console or the USB-A port in the glove box. Step 4. In order to put your controller into pairing mode, first press the Xbox button for one second until it lights up. Then, press and hold the circular pair button located on the back of the controller for three seconds.
Step 5. Once the wireless adapter and Xbox controller ared paired up, the lights on both of these devices will stop blinking. You will see a notification message on your Tesla&#8217;s screen that confirms the pairing.

<a href="https://www.licarco.com/cars">Electric vehicles</a> are getting really popular, but the main concerns, such as short range and long charging times that hold conventional vehicle owners back from switching sides are still yet to be solved. That is where higher-voltage electric vehicles are coming into play. Tesla recently announced its 1000-volt system and hinted more Tesla vehicles will benefit from the new tech. Future EVs will eventually make the switch from 400V to higher voltage systems.
800V or higher voltage electric vehicles are capable of delivering <a href="https://www.licarco.com/news/top-15-ev-charging-networks-in-the-us">ultra-fast charging</a> rates and offer higher performance while improving the efficiency of the all systems. 800V electric vehicles can only be possible by employing an 800V battery and using SiC (Silicone Carbide) inverter, proper cabling, OBC (On-board Charger), DCDC converter and other electrical equipments that support higher voltage levels. Conventional electric vehicles come with 400V electrical architecture as standard. Because of the voltage limit, today&#8217;s electric vehicles are limited to a maximum of 400-volt when they are connected to a DC charging station. In order to reach higher charge rates, current levels should go up to 600A or even more, which is not ideal for the infrastructure that charging stations heavily rely on.
The first higher-voltage EV is the Porsche Taycan, which has a cutting-edge 800V inverter built-in. Its DC charging rate can go as high as 270 kW with the proper charging setup. After that Hyundai and Kia developed an alternative 800V charging tech to avoid using an expensive 800V SiC inverter. In late 2021, Lucid Motors launched its first vehicle Lucid Air with an industry-leading 924V system developed by <a href="https://eepower.com/news/wolfspeed-announces-the-lucid-air-is-using-its-sic-power-modules/#">Wolfspeed</a>. And one year later, Tesla unveiled its first 1000V vehicle architecture with the launch of the tri-motor electric truck Tesla Semi. <a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/ev-charging-800-volt">General Motors</a>, Volkswagen, and, of course, Chinese brands such as Aion, Avatr, Xpeng, Zeekr, BYD, Voyah and Li Auto have also been developing 800V high-voltage electrical systems for their EVs.
In this article, we researched our way into higher voltage electric vehicles and created a list of benefits of owning an 800V EV.
<h2>Faster Charging Compared to 400V Electric Vehicles</h2>

800V or higher voltage systems allow electric vehicles to be charged at as high as 480 kW, <a href="https://www.licarco.com/xpeng-g9-awd">Xpeng G9</a> proved. Regular 400V electric vehicles aren&#8217;t capable of doing that, because of the charging infrastructure&#8217;s current limit. When you plug your 400V vehicle into a DC charger, you limit your session to 400-volt. To provide faster charging speeds, EV charger should deliver more current, sometimes as high as 600A or even more (The third-gen Tesla Superchargers can deliver up to 660-amper). In order to increase the current, thicker and water-cooled cables are needed. Even using these expensive cables are not enough to lower down the charge efficiency, as conduction losses will increase up to nine times.
EV manufacturers have been developing 800V charging technologies to overcome this fast-charging problem. Some companies such as Porsche/Audi, Lucid Motors, and Xpeng use SiC inverters inside their EVs. These next-gen SiC inverters can handle higher voltages and also improve efficiency. Hyundai and Kia took a different approach to this matter. Korean automakers developed a technology that manages to provide 800-volt charging by using electric motors as generator and a regular IGBT inverter.
Thanks to more advanced electronics, 800-volt charging enables vehicle owners to reach up to 480 kW DC charging rates. For instance, Xpeng G9 and Aion LX Plus are already on sale that support ultra-fast 480+ kW charging. Lucid Air can go as high as 300 kW. Porsche Taycan did perform similiarly. Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 is also capable of delivering up to 240 kW DC charging speeds. 800V charging is definitely the future of EVs!
<h3>More Efficient &amp; More Powerful Electric Drivetrains</h3>

By switching to a 800V architecture, EV manufacturers can make use of higher voltage motors as well. Porsche is the first company to implement an 800V electric motor into its vehicles. Higher voltage improves overall power density of the motor unit and it reduces the maximum torque required to achieve the same output power due to extended RPM range.
As the DC link voltage of the EV motor units increase, the current levels decrease. This leads to lower copper loss and improves efficiency of the electrical traction systems. Higher voltage motors are also tend to produce more power than lower voltage solutions.
From the efficiency perspective, the next-gen SiC inverters used inside 800V electric vehicles are also much more efficient. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/byd-yangwang-u8">BYD recently unveiled</a> its first SiC inverter developed in-house, which scores an efficiency level of 99.5 percent.
<h3>800V Architectures Mean Lighter Electric Cars</h3>

800-volt electrical architectures can be created by using thinner cables between the battery pack and the inverter, DC charging port, OBC, and other equipments. As a result, 800V electric vehicles will use less copper and that would reduce the overall weight of the car.
Higher voltage electric motors are also significantly lighter and more power-dense than regular lower voltage units. That means 800V electric vehicles can be equipped with smaller, lighter motors. That creates more room for batteries as well.
<h3>Reduced Cost of Cabling, Less Copper Used Inside the Vehicle</h3>
Electric vehicles use more copper than any other vehicles. It takes 2 to 4 times more copper to build an EV than an ICE vehicle. But unlike 400V EVs, higher voltage systems don&#8217;t require thick copper cables. That will not only help manufacturers reduce the cost of cabling but also ease up the global copper supply chain. Because EV batteries and heavy investments in EV charging infrastructure have already been causing problems for the copper industry, thinner cables will help in the near future.
Here are some disadvantages of choosing 800V electrical system over a regular 400V architecture:
&#8211; Higher cost of electrical insulation and clearance
&#8211; Higher voltage battery packs tend to perform less reliable than 400V systems, because they contain larger number of series connections. The impact of single cell failure in a pack like this would be much higher than the 400V batteries with more parallel cells.
&#8211; Lower voltage battery packs are more energy-dense than the similiarly designed 800V batteries, which is the result of all the additional electrical clearance requirements around high voltage systems and the much larger BMS.

What is 800V Electric Vehicle? | What are the Benefits of 800V Systems?

The expected change took place in the battery cell factory to be established in Turkey by the American automotive giant Ford and its business partner Koç Holding. Announced in March 2022 with the partnership of South Korean SK On, the production facility gained a new partner after this technology supplier withdrew from the partnership.
Ford Motor Company published a statement on its official website on the subject. It announced that it has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with LG Energy Solution for the lithium-ion battery cell production facility. The plant will take place in Ankara Başkent OSB. The facility will shortly resume its formal construction with the Korean corporate partner.
LG is the second-largest lithium-ion battery manufacturer in the world which previously made battery factory investments in the USA with Ford. The company plans to start the production of more affordable LFP cells soon. Additionally, the company also produces high-energy density battery cells with NMC and NCA cathodes. Cell types will be available in the facility in three years.
<h2>First Phase in 2026, Second Phase in 2029</h2>
The first phase of the factory investment will be completed in 2026. According to Ford&#8217;s statement, the annual battery cell production capacity in the first phase will be 25 GWh. With the commissioning of the second phase in 2029, the total capacity of the Ford-LG-Koç joint plant will reach 45 GWh.
Just like Ford, Koç Holding has been collaborating with LG for a long time. In three years, Koç-Ford Otosan will be able to cease importing cells and build entirely domestic battery packs. The company uses cells from LG&#8217;s 70 GWh facility in Poland for E-Transit.
LG has been producing battery cells in a total of six countries. It includes the USA, South Korea, China, Poland, Indonesia, and Canada. The company will add Turkey to its portfolio as the seventh country. The battery giant has a total production capacity of around 200 GWh as of the end of 2022. The company wants to continue to be among the largest in the world in its field. They target to have a capacity of 300 GWh and 520 GWh by the end of  2023 and 2025 respectively.

BYD is planing to construct a new facility in Wenzhou, China to increase the number of batteries it produced. The new factory will have an annual capacity of 20 gigawatt-hours when its operations began in 2024.

According to SNE Research’s data, the Chinese manufacturer supplied the equivalent of 43.6 GWh of batteries within the first 9 months of this year. The company has increased its production by 177% year-over-year and currently captured 12.8% of the worldwide EV batteries market. For the time being, the Chinese company mostly manufactures batteries for its own cars. Also, In June, officials announced plans to start supplying Tesla with batteries “very soon&#8221;.

There is a mystery about the new facility that BYD hasn&#8217;t yet disclosed which batteries would be produced there. According to the statement in the Chinese news release, BYD will &#8220;produce batteries in the new factory by utilizing one of the previously available prospective battery technologies.”
BYD produces its batteries with the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technology. The company is using them in the company&#8217;s well-known electric buses and and the blade batteries is in electric vehicles.
BYD&#8217;s Growth Momentum so Strong
According to SNE, BYD has gone up to 2nd place among companies that have the largest production capacity in the first half of 2022. The leader in the sector are Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL). But compared to the first half of 2021 and 2021 as a whole, BYD&#8217;s growth momentum is so strong. With this momentum, the Chinese company has overtaken the second place from LG Energy Solution on September this year.

Stellantis has invested well over $30 billion on software engineering and digitalization. The company wants Jeep to dominate the overall market for electric SUVs.

Since the highways in Europe are a little bit tighter than those in the US, the new Jeep Avenger was built expressly to provide customers the Jeep experience. WLTP estimates a 250 miles/400 kilometers range for the Avenger. Despite being smaller, it will nonetheless maintain the typical Jeep toughness. Next year, construction on it will begin in Tychy, Poland.
The Stellantis STLA Small platform, which has hitherto only been used for FWD cars, will be used to build the Jeep Avenger, but the car is highlighting its off-road potential. That suggests that, at the very least in more upscale models, the Avenger will ultimately be offered with dual motors. This September, the Jeep Avenger will make its formal appearance at the Paris Auto Show.

The Jeep Recon will be the preferred option for real off-road lovers looking for emission free EV, especially for drivers in North America. The Recon will indeed be fully competent of tackling challenging off-road routes, the manufacturer claims. It was created from the ground up as an electric vehicle and is not on the basis of any Jeep models that use engines with internal combustion.
Recon will have enough energy to head back to the closest spot for a recharging after tackling the infamous Rubicon Trail. In the first quarter of 2023 will see the start of reservations for North American clients. The Recon would be available in a variety of international markets.

The Wagoneer S, the last new electric car Stellantis has introduced, is scheduled to go on sale in 2023. Although it will be offered in other markets as well, it is also largely aimed at North American consumers.
It will come with an AWD system with two motors that can produce up to 600 hp. It should have a 400 miles/643 kilometers range and a 0-60 mph/0-96 kmh speed of 3.5 seconds.

Three New Battery-Powered Jeep Models Are Unveiled

The establishment of a joint venture firm to manufacture lithium-ion EV batteries in the US will take place in 2022, according to a joint announcement from Honda and LG Energy Solution.
The joint project battery plant is projected to achieve an annual manufacturing capacity of about 40 GWh of cells. The two businesses are planning to invest a sum of $4.4 billion in it. That equals to over 400,000 batteries with a 100 kWh capacity apiece.
Future electric car versions from Honda and Acura for the NA market will only use the JV&#8217;s batteries. Although the precise location of the new gigafactory has not yet been determined, it is unknown when mass production will begin (most probably early 2023) and when building will begin (at long last 2025).
<h2>Honda Will Hold a 49% And LG Energy Solution Will Have a 51% Stake</h2>
Honda disclosed in a statement that it will contribute $1.7 billion for a 49% part in the JV. 51% of the stock will belong to LG Energy Solution. 70,000 units are the original yearly sales target. According to the timeframe, batteries for the Honda/Acura upcoming EVs, depending on the company&#8217;s own proposal named &#8220;e:Architecture,&#8221; are expected to be supplied by the forthcoming battery joint venture with in 2nd quarter of the 2020.

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest automaker, plans to build a battery plant in the US. The announcement is made on Wednesday that the company will invest $4.1 billion in a new battery factory in Canada together with South Korea’s LG Energy Solution, formerly known as LG Chem.
Stellantis, the parent company of Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler, created a joint venture with LG last year and the venture will build two planned battery factories. The first will be in Windsor, Ontario. The battery facility in Canada is expected to begin building later this year and will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.  The factory is expected to have an annual production capacity of more than 45-gigawatt hours and will create an estimated 2,500 new jobs.
The officials announced at the event on Wednesday that the second factory will be constructed in the US. Stellantis has also released that another venture with Samsung SDI will build a battery plant in North America.

Stellantis has stated that it targets to sell 5 million electric vehicles by 2030. The company has announced a detailed electrification plan in 2021 to produce EV versions of its existing cars, including Dodge Ram 1500 and multiple Jeep models.  The fourth-largest automaker has also shown the plans Chrysler Airflow concept.
While the auto industry is getting electrified day by day, battery producing capacity is also growing. Almost every major automaker globally has announced battery factory plans, including allocating billions to the production of batteries which are the most critical component for their vehicles.
Ford Company has three new battery plants that will have 129 GWh capacity per year whereas General Motors with LG Energy Solutions plans to build four new battery factories with a total annual capacity of 140GWh. Volkswagen is also aiming to have six battery cell production plants operating in Europe by 2030 for a total of 240GWh a year.
Stellantis have an objective of having a capacity of 45 gigawatt-hours (GWh) per year with the new Windsor factory while the latest battery plant plans in the US will contribute to the company’s battery production capacity.
