The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

⚡ Chinese ZEEKR极氪 announced a major update to its first car, the 001, by replacing over 2,000 components.
🔋 The 2024 Zeekr 001, available with 95 and 100 kWh battery options, now features an 800V architecture. This not only boosts charging speeds up to 350 kW but also significantly enhances the vehicle’s efficiency.
🟢 Transitioning to the new-generation thermal management system called PTM 2.0 along with the battery, the 4.9-meter electric crossover can operate efficiently in both high and low temperatures.
💨 The new 001 offers a single-motor option producing 310 kW (422 HP) and a dual-motor option capable of generating 560 kW (762 HP). Hence, it’s expected to have a starting price around $40,000.
🚗 Equipped with LiDAR sensor-based autonomous driving mode, a new infotainment system powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset, and numerous interior design changes, the exact price of the 001 will be revealed upon its release on February 27th.

🟢The 5-meter sedan features a base model with a 150 kW motor, a 60.48 kWh LFP battery, and 110 kW DC charging support. All models come equipped with the new Level 2+ intelligent driving system, DiPilot 100, which has been in development for over 1,000 days. 🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

The Q6 e-tron, which is priced 10% cheaper than its sibling model, the Porsche Macan EV, developed on the same platform, stands out with both more compact and lightweight electric motors and a large prismatic cell-based massive battery.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

⚡ 24M, a startup developing semi-solid state batteries using dry coating technology, has announced its ability to recycle old vehicle batteries at low cost through &#8216;direct battery material recycling&#8217; method.
🟢 The details of this new direct recycling method have not been disclosed yet, as current electrode binders make it impractical. With its &#8216;Liforever&#8217; technology, 24M solves this issue by recycling without forming &#8220;black mass&#8221; and without disrupting the structure of valuable materials, making the recycling process profitable even for inexpensive cathodes like LFP.
💰 Volkswagen, which acquired 25% of 24M in 2022, was already developing dry electrode coating technology, reducing battery cell production costs by 40%.

Lithium-ion cells in today&#8217;s electric vehicle batteries are produced by applying a chemical solvent mixed with anode/cathode materials to copper/aluminum foil and then drying them through a process with high energy consumption and investment cost. Additionally, it has a relatively long production time.
The dry coating technology pioneered by Tesla, which emerged as an alternative to this method, eliminates the need for huge drying kilns in battery electrode production, both reducing energy consumption and saving manufacturers from the trouble of processing toxic chemicals that occur during drying, as well as enabling faster electrode production with high efficiency. It also lowers the cost. Moreover, thanks to the production of thicker electrodes, it also contributes to the energy density of the cells.

Volkswagen revealed that it has successfully incorporated dry coating technology into both anode and cathode manufacture in conjunction with the American 24M operating in this sector. Tesla can only currently make anodes with a dry coating. Along with the 24M partnership, German Koenig &amp; Bauer&#8217;s production equipment is a significant factor in Volkswagen&#8217;s success.
It is stated that with the transition to dry coating, the factory investment will decrease by hundreds of millions of euros, the factory area will be reduced by 15%, the energy consumption will decrease by 30% and the cost of the battery cells will be reduced to almost half the price.
Volkswagen is building huge plants in Germany, Spain, and Canada for its battery manufacturing subsidiary PowerCo. These facilities will start operating with the old-generation production technique in the first place and then switch to dry coating. New cells, which will cost much less, are expected to be used in electric vehicles in 2027.

50% Cheaper Electric Vehicle Battery To Come From Volkswagen

Yesterday, Reuters published an article about Tesla&#8217;s 4680 cells and how Elon Musk&#8217;s company is only halfway through making its special batteries into the mass-production. But the main point of this article is not the delay itself, it is why dry-coating battery electrode manufacturing process, which is the cause of this delay, is crucial to Tesla&#8217;s ultimate goal: producing cheaper, longer lifetime lithium-ion batteries.

Popular news outlet contacted a dozen of experts familiar with Tesla&#8217;s battery manufacturing efforts. Almost all of these experts confirmed that Tesla is struggling with the mass production of 4680 cells at its Kato Road facility in California. The reason for this is the new electrode manufacturing process called dry-coating/or DBE (Dry Battery Electrode). Tesla acquired this tech from Maxwell Technologies, a San Diego-based ultracapacitor company it bought in 2019. But implementing this new technology into mass production is not as easy as Elon Musk thought.
The good news is that Tesla will eventually enter high-volume production of its 4680 cells sometime in 2023. It will help Tesla halve the cost of <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/2021-tesla-model-y-performance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Model Y</a>&#8216;s battery pack, saving almost $5,500 per vehicle. That&#8217;s 8 percent of a Model Y&#8217;s US retail price.
Using dry-coating tech will not only cut costs but also help EV-maker rapidly ramp up their battery production. According to research data mentioned by famous Youtuber <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iLZmz_IQt4&amp;ab_channel=TheLimitingFactor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Limited Factor</a>, dry-coating process will speed up cell production 7 times compared to conventional wet-coating methods. New tech will dramatically decrease initial battery production investment as well.

24M, a UK-based battery manufacturing company, is also betting high on dry-coating technology. According to a document issued by this company, using the new tech will help battery makers avoid spending approx. 22 hours in the electrode creation phase, and buying expensive tools for mixing the solvent with electrodes, vacuum drying, solvent recovery, etc.
Dry-coating is more environmental-friendly than any other electrode processing method available today. This method will allow companies to use up to 10 times less space for the battery plants, reduce their energy bills up to 10 times by not using huge vacuum dryers, and increase the energy density of cells without going through costly R&amp;D phases. Thanks to all those advantages, lithium-ion batteries will be cheaper, initial investments will be lower, and battery plants will be smaller.
Dry-coating will definitely be a tremendous advancement in the field of battery manufacturing. Cheaper batteries mean that electrification of the automotive industry will speed up quite a lot and average EV prices will hopefully go down.
