The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.
Having surpassed the 800,000 sales mark in three years, the Seal U will initially come to our country only with the plug-in hybrid version. This motor option stands out with a starting price of $18,000.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

🔋The 2024 BYD Han boasts a range of 506 km (CLTC), which extends up to 715 kilometers in the version with an 85.44 kWh battery. During today&#8217;s event, it was emphasized for the first time that the car features a silicon carbide chip inverter and an 800V architecture. However, the charging speed of the largest battery being limited to 155 kW indicates that the entire high-voltage system is not yet ready for 800V.
🚗In the performance version of the car, a dual-motor powertrain capable of producing 517 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque is used, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.9 seconds.

With an energy density of 720 Wh/kg, the lithium metal cell features a lithium and manganese-based mixture on the cathode side, while being a solid electrolyte lithium-metal type solution, eliminating safety issues unlike lithium-ion cells.
Tailan, which completed the second phase that will increase its capacity to 2 GWh at its Chongqing factory by the end of 2023, is also building a massive 10 GWh facility in China’s Anhui province. Mass production of semi-solid-state cells with an energy density of around 400-500 Wh/kg is already underway.
While fully solid-state lithium metal solutions, like those from Tailan, currently seem unlikely to replace lithium-ion cells due to their high cost, they are expected to rapidly decrease in price in the coming years.
Electric vehicle manufacturer <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/hashtag/?keywords=nio&amp;highlightedUpdateUrns=urn%3Ali%3Aactivity%3A7181583793969909760" data-attribute-index="1">#NIO</a>, which is beginning to offer a semi-solid-state battery option providing 360 Wh/kg energy density, promises a range of 1,000 km on a single charge with this battery. However, it’s worth noting that the battery alone is more expensive than a mid-range car.
If the Chinese venture succeeds in commercializing this battery promising a density of 720 Wh/kg, its use in the aviation sector will become possible. Another potential application would be military systems.

The Battery Venture to Provide A Range of 2,000 KM on A Single Charge!

Chinese-American battery manufacturer Farasis announced its new strategy and a new high-nickel battery product at a press event in Beijing. The next-gen lithium-ion battery is called SPS, or &#8220;Super Pouch Solution&#8221;. As the name suggests, Farasis is switching to CTP (Cell-to-Pack) battery design with bigger pouch cells. This new design will allow EVs using the latest cells from Farasis to travel up to 400 kilometers with 10 minutes of charging. Super Pouch will also support the direct-recycling process developed by the battery maker.

Thanks to the bigger, thicker pouch-cell form factor, Super Pouch batteries will reach a gravimetric pack-level energy density of 330 Wh/kg. Farasis confirmed that its new NMC cell will support 800V electrical architecture, up to 4C discharge rates, and 300-350 kW DC charging speeds that will allow 400 kilometers of range with a 10-minute charging session.
The module-less battery pack will include a two-sided liquid cooling system and heat dissipation plates on three sides of every pouch cell. Advanced thermal management system will not only quadruple heat dissipation efficiency but also extend battery life to more than 3,000 cycles.
Horizontally placed big pouch cells will allow Farasis to decrease the number of battery parts by 50%, reduce material costs by up to 33%, and increase volume utilization to 75%. The compact battery pack will be able to hold off more than 90 percent of its energy capacity in extreme cold weather conditions (-20 Celcius).

Currently, Farasis only offers high-nickel NMC811 and NMC622 pouch cells. With the new strategy, Chinese company will add some competitive options to its product portfolio, such as LFP, high-manganese NMC, and low-cost sodium-ion battery cells.
Thanks to a much improved semi-solid electrolyte and silicone anode, Farasis will be able to produce NMC cells with 300 to 400 Wh/kg energy density. After switching to a fully solid-state electrolyte in 2028, energy density levels will reach as far as 500 Wh/kilogram, which will hopefully be enough to be used in the aviation industry.
Next year, Farasis is getting into the LFP wagon as well. They will not only produce lithium-iron-phosphate batteries but also offer more energy-dense LMFP (Lithium manganese-iron-phosphate) cells. The energy density level will vary between 200 to 240 Wh/kg. These will not be the cheapest option Farasis will provide. Sodium-ion battery production is also due in 2023 with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg. Farasis predicts that its sodium-ion cells will be best for energy storage applications and entry-level EVs. Energy density-wise, these cells will go as high as 230 Wh/kg by 2030.
<h2>Battery Plants Will Cost Less, Thanks to Improved Battery Tech</h2>

Improved battery chemistry and much higher energy density will allow Farasis to cut manufacturing equipment costs by 50 percent. Super Pouch-producing factories will also require 60% less space for the same amount of battery production output.
Farasis also said that new battery plants will consume 35% less energy and lower production costs by 30%. Chinese company has agreed to open a battery plant in Turkey with domestic EV brand <a href="https://www.licarco.com/togg-c-suv">Togg</a>. This new plant will definitely produce next-gen pouch cells from Farasis starting in 2025. <a href="https://www.licarco.com/zeekr-001-single-motor-we">Geely</a> also established a joint venture with Farasis to construct multiple battery cell production sites and co-develop future battery technologies. Both of these partners will make use of Super Pouch&#8217;s cost-cutting, energy-dense design.

Farasis has been developing lithium-ion batteries ever since Yu Wang and Keith Kepler established their first company in 2002. After a dramatic transfer to China in 2009 and a collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, Farasis quickly became the industry&#8217;s one of the most successful battery start-ups in the early 2010s. Farasis Unveils ‘Super Pouch’ Battery Cell, 400 KM Range in 10 Minutes

<a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/how-many-tesla-cars-have-been-sold" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tesla</a> will upgrade its 72-kWh battery inside the Model Y with <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.licarco.com/news/catl-will-start-producing-lfp-batteries-with-15-percent-more-energy-thanks-to-manganese" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CATL</a>&#8216;s latest technology, according to the Chinese news outlet Late Post. CATL calls its new battery &#8220;M3P&#8221;, which holds 15% more energy than its current LFP batteries. Thanks to a more energy-dense battery pack, Tesla&#8217;s new model will weigh less and offer more mileage.
Late Post reported that the new battery will be used inside the 2023 Tesla Model Ys built in the Giga Shanghai factory later this year. Tesla would start producing new electric SUVs with CATL&#8217;s brand-new battery as soon as Q4 2022, the report said. Refreshed Model Y is going to be delivered to Chinese customers in early 2023.
CATL has been developing an improved version of the highly popular LFP battery cells for quite a while. M3P will solve LFP&#8217;s low energy density stats compared to NMC cells. It is reported that the Chinese battery maker would produce M3P cells offering 210 Wh/kg gravimetric energy density. As a result, EV manufacturers could build much lighter vehicles or make those vehicles travel farther while storing more energy inside a battery pack that weighs the same.

CATL has yet to reveal M3P&#8217;s cathode chemistry. But it hinted multiple times that the new way forward would be LMFP (Lithium-manganese-iron-phosphate). Conventional LFP batteries cost less than NMC, provide a longer life cycle, and decrease the possibility of catching fire when thermal runaway occurs. The only downside is the lower energy density. BYD&#8217;s one of the first LFP battery solutions and only offer 90 Wh/kg, less than half of what NMC cells store.
To further improve LFP&#8217;s energy density, a significant number of companies rely on new cathode chemistry with manganese-additive. CATL will be the first manufacturer to bring &#8216;LMFP&#8217; cells into the market with the launch of M3P batteries. NIO has been developing a similar chemistry for its future EVs. Chinese sources said the company would not only add manganese but also add a third metal into the cathode of its M3P cells. The third metal used in the ground-breaking cathode is yet to be disclosed. Magnesium and aluminum are two highly likely options here.
CATL&#8217;s main goal is to help its customers build cheaper and longer-range EVs. M3P cell, with its promising cathode could be the key to achieving its goal. M3P will improve the LFP battery&#8217;s energy density and keep the manufacturing costs down. The Chinese firm will also not have to spend too much money to change its production lines for the new battery cells, as the LMFP production process is not so different than the conventional LFP products.

2023 Tesla Model Y said to use CATL’s new energy-dense M3P Battery

The world&#8217;s biggest battery manufacturer CATL will start producing new LFP cells with 15 percent more energy density, Chinese media reported. This new lithium-ion cell can hold significantly more energy than traditional LFP solutions, thanks to a new cathode material that contains manganese. CATL concluded the necessary tests on its brand-new cell chemistry and has already started to prepare for production in the second half of 2022.
LMFP (Lithium manganese iron phosphate) is the new way forward for the Chinese LFP cell manufacturers, as this new technology can overcome LFP&#8217;s most important shortcoming against NMC/NCA cells, which is dramatically lower energy density. To commercialize its new tech, CATL spent more than $60 million last year to purchase a 60% stake at an LMFP cathode material producer called Lithitech last year.
There are several ongoing R&amp;D projects that aim to make LFP cells hold more energy, and LMFP is probably the closest candidate to launch onto the market right now. Aside from CATL, BYD, Sunwoda, and EVE have also been developing similar cathode technology for the near future. Gotion High-tech, another Chinese LFP cell maker, already announced that their LFP cell enhanced with manganese is going to be in production next year or so. 
<h2>LFP Will Dominate Global Lithium Battery Market</h2>
Due to higher prices on materials used in leading cathode solution NMC, LFP battery cells have gained traction in the last couple of years. LFP offers a longer life cycle, increased safety for EVs, less heating, and cheaper manufacturing costs. According to Chinese market reports, LFP has been the most popular choice among electric vehicles since July 2021.
LFP cells dominated the EV battery market in China with a 59% market share in the first six months of this year. NMC had shrunk to 41 percent and has kept losing big accounts such as Tesla to LFP producers. In global terms, NMC will hand down its crown to LFP by 2028, analysts predict.

One of the most common criticisms leveled at EVs is their limited range. Although a 480 km range is now more common for current electric vehicles, some fossil-fuel models can travel two or three times as far on a single tank. However, what if your BEV could travel 1.440 km on a single charge? Theion, a German battery startup, is appealing advanced technologies that could achieve this capability as early as 2024.
Sulfur is essential to Theion&#8217;s new tech, and the company&#8217;s name is obtained from the Greek word for this yellow mineral. According to CEO Dr. Ulrich Ehmes, it possesses the specific properties to usher in an upheaval in battery chemistry, with ramifications throughout all crucial sectors for EVs. Marek Slavik, co-founder, and CTO had been continuing to work on the innovation for over a couple of years, and Ehmes has recently arrived to make it a development fact. As a matter of fact, sulfur, unlike lithium, appears to require even less energy to create and expense only pennies on the dollar to obtain, according to the company.
&#8220;Current battery tech employs nickel, manganese, and cobalt for the cathode,&#8221; Theion CEO Dr. Ulrich Ehmes explains. &#8220;It&#8217;s called NMC 811 because it&#8217;s made up of 80% nickel, 10% cobalt, and 10% manganese.&#8221; In our exemplification, we substitute sulfur for NMC 811. So there is no nickel, manganese, or cobalt in our cells, and we replace the current collective folds of copper and aluminum with graphene, so there is no aluminum or copper in our cells as well. We only have lithium metal foil, sulfur, and carbon in our cells.&#8221;
Theion&#8217;s next stage is to deliver its material to aerospace customers later this year as an aspect of the processing is applied. The company then intends to support air taxis, drones, cell phones, and notebooks before transitioning to the electric vehicles sector as early as 2024.

New Sulfur Battery Technology Allowing 3x More EV Distance

In a global market with demand surpassing 3,000GWh by 2030, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) will overtake nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) as the dominating battery chemistry by 2028. That&#8217;s according to a recent report from Wood Mackenzie Power &amp; Renewables on the lithium-ion battery manufacturing business. China&#8217;s CATL and South Korea&#8217;s LG are the highest-ranked manufacturers expected to increase its most manufacturing capability this decade. By 2030, CATL plans to have 800GWh of yearly production capacity online.
The raw materials required to make them are plentiful, low-cost, and available in practically every country. As a consequence, they are usually less expensive. Nickel prices have reached insane new highs today, exposing the pricing difference between LFP and conventional batteries even further. Increased nickel prices have already prompted automakers to boost the prices of many of the current electric vehicles on the market.

Gotion High-Tech expects to be able to begin large-scale production of an LFP battery with an energy output of 230 Wh/kg by the end of the year. Comparable battery packs with an energy density of 210 Wh/kg are already in production. In comparison, the energy density of today&#8217;s cobalt and nickel-based cells is around 250 to 270 Wh/kg. &#8220;At a certain point, ternary lithium batteries will be replaced on a wider scale in Gotion,&#8221; Gotion CEO Li Zhen said this week at the China EV100 Forum 2022. Notwithstanding to this, Gotion continues to spend money on new ternary battery tech use much less nickel and cobalt. Lithium-ion batteries tend to lose their energy capacity over time. That is mostly due to extended usage. According to a study published by Cox Automotive, average car buyers assume that an electric vehicle battery only lasts around 100,000 kilometers (65,000 miles). Although electric car batteries are prone to losing their charge capacity, like every other energy storage solution, these batteries use state-of-the-art anode/cathode chemistries that allow them to last at least 10 years, sometimes even up to 20 years. Customers shouldn&#8217;t worry about wearing their battery any time soon.
Batteries will eventually start to degrade and lose charging capacity over time. The average loss of battery capacity is around 1.5 to 2.5 percent per year. According to Plug In America, the luxury sedan Tesla Model S’s battery only loses 5 percent of its original battery capacity over the first 80,000 km (50,000 miles).
Most manufacturers, including Nissan, Tesla, and Toyota, offer an eight-year (or 160,000 km/100,000 miles) warranty on their electric car batteries. Some automakers, such as Hyundai, provide lifetime coverage for their EV batteries. BMW, Chevrolet, Tesla, Volkswagen, and Nissan will also cover a battery pack replacement if its capacity drops to a certain percentage (70% in most cases). If the car has less than 70% of its original capacity before the end of the eighth year, the warranty will cover all battery replacement costs.
<h3>Electric Car Battery vs Smartphone Battery</h3>
Smartphones have no thermal management for the battery, and fast charging will result in a hot battery. In hot temperatures, battery reactions will speed up and degrade the battery quicker. That’s why smartphone batteries rarely last more than two years.
Electric cars, on the other hand, have advanced thermal management systems, which help the battery pack to optimize its efficiency and eliminate harmful effects of cold/hot temperatures caused by weather, heavy usage/lack of usage, etc.

According to <a href="https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-pack-prices-fall-to-an-average-of-132-kwh-but-rising-commodity-prices-start-to-bite/">Bloomberg NEF</a>, the average price of lithium-ion batteries dropped from $1,160 per kWh in 2010 to $132 in 2021. Thanks to lower prices, electric car battery replacement costs are also dropping sharply. In order to decrease battery repair bills, automakers are also adopting the remanufactured battery pack strategy, similar to Tesla&#8217;s lower-cost replacement packs with refurbished battery modules.
There is sufficient data on the internet that tells us how much does a Tesla battery cost. According to <a href="https://www.findmyelectric.com/blog/tesla-battery-replacement-cost-explained/">FindmyElectric.com</a>, Tesla Model S full battery replacement should cost between $13,000 to $20,000. A full battery replacement of the premium electric SUV Model X would be around $14,000-$21,000. Tesla&#8217;s mid-size EVs, namely Model 3 and Model Y, are cheaper to repair. The battery pack replacement of these models costs $11,000-$16,000 including labor, miscellaneous parts. The exact replacement cost varies depending on the condition of the battery pack.
Not all EV manufacturers use remanufactured packs to make battery replacement more affordable. Ford, for example, asks more than $43,000 for a brand-new Mustang Mach-E battery pack in Canada. But Ford dealers in the US will charge you around $18,000 to $24,000 for a Mach-E replacement.
<h3>Does Electric Car Battery Disposal Cause Pollution?</h3>
Electric vehicles technically don’t produce any exhaust emissions like carbon monoxide (CO) and NOx. These types of vehicles are definitely cleaner than ICE vehicles. But that doesn’t mean EVs don’t have any carbon footprint. Electric cars use electricity to charge up and a high portion of the electricity generation causes heavy pollution.
EVs are also indirectly polluting the environment with their battery packs. The production and disposal of lithium-ion batteries definitely cause pollution. Of course, batteries and electric vehicles are getting cleaner every day, thanks to stricter rules implemented by governments that encourage manufacturers to act more environment-friendly, and promising developments in the lithium-ion battery recycling industry.
When electric car batteries reach the end of their life, they can be recycled for valuable materials including lithium, nickel, manganese, cobalt, and graphite, which means electric car battery disposal can decrease EV&#8217;s carbon footprint.
Tesla already recycles batteries from its vehicles. Volkswagen’s pilot recycling plant for used EV batteries has also begun operations. Elon Musk expects the auto industry to have enough battery materials inside the existing EV fleet in the next 30-40 years, eliminating the need for mining new materials. The first European lithium-ion battery cell manufacturer Northvolt produced its first cell made “100 percent from recycled nickel, manganese, and cobalt”. But approximately half of the materials in an EV battery pack are recycled. There is still a very long way to go in the battery recycling business.

<h3>Is It Possible to Repair/Recondition An Electric Car Battery?</h3>
When auto services accept an electric car with the inspection of battery failure, first they run a routine diagnosis and determine how much of the original energy storage capacity the battery can still provide. If there are broken battery modules, and the total capacity degraded to a level lower than 70 percent, the electric car battery will most likely be replaced with a new unit.
The electric car services usually don&#8217;t just swap bad modules for good ones, instead, they replace the entire battery with a brand new or remanufactured one. After a new battery pack is installed, the broken/old one is sent back to factories where broken modules will be replaced with good ones, and any other battery pack problems are solved.
Tesla has been using a similar approach to fix battery packs. Ideally for Tesla, all replacement batteries are remanufactured.
