The Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has opened orders for the Seal U model. For the 2024 model year, there is a significant reduction in prices, almost $3,000.

Audi, using NCM811 cathode cells produced by Chinese company Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) in Germany, states that the larger cell form facilitates battery production. Additionally, it emphasizes that the newly developed smart thermal management system enhances battery life by continuously conditioning the battery and reduces charging time.
Regarding the engine, the company claims a 50% increase in efficiency compared to the first-generation electric Audis and states that it can produce more power with smaller motors by increasing power density by 62%. It should be noted that the Q6 e-tron uses an asynchronous ASM motor at the front and a permanent magnet synchronous PSM motor at the rear, differentiating it from the electric #Macan.

December 27: LG Chem&#8217;s battery cathode facility held its groundbreaking ceremony last week. The corporation has modified some of its initial goals.
Originally, the facility was scheduled to begin construction in Q1 2023 and begin mass production in the latter part of 2025. Thus, the production debut date has been rescheduled to &#8220;starting from 2026,&#8221; over a year after the groundbreaking.
Originally, LG Chem stated that by 2027, it would be producing 120,000 tons of cathode material yearly, which would be sufficient to power the batteries of 1.2 million electric vehicles with a 498 km/310-mile range between charges.
However, as of right now, the factory can only produce half of the initial 600,000 high-performance pure electric car cathode materials that were planned for each year.

Throughout October, Toyota and LG Chem agreed to a $2.5 billion contract for the supply of cathode materials throughout North America.

The new clean vehicle tax credit, which came into effect in January 2023, is bringing down the cost of owning an electric vehicle. Before the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act), popular brands like Tesla and General Motors were not eligible because of the sales limit. Thanks to new legislation, some of the best EVs, such as the Tesla Model Y and Chevrolet Bolt now qualify for the tax credit. But electric vehicles assembled outside the US are now disqualified.
Normally, when an EV manufacturer sells 200,000 vehicles in the United States, the $7,500 federal tax credit halves to $3,750, and that process repeats a few times before being reduced to no credit. Tesla and General Motors already sold more than enough eligible EVs. So, there is no tax credit for these brands, right? Not quite. Let us explain.
With the Inflation Reduction Act, the 200,000 sales cap on tax credit is gone, and EVs from Tesla and General Motors are once again eligible for the tax credit. But there are now price caps for different kinds of vehicles. We try to sum up some of the new details of tax credit eligibility and created a list of vehicles eligible for the tax credit in the United States.

According to <a href="https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/hybrids-evs/electric-vehicles-that-qualify-for-new-ev-tax-credit-a9310530660/">Consumer Reports</a>, new tax credit rules will go into place in March 2023. This new bill will limit the credit value based on the vehicle&#8217;s battery origin, the origin of the battery materials, etc. And starting in 2024, the tax credit eligibility will be lost, if any materials of the battery are from &#8220;foreign entities of concern&#8221;, such as China and Russia. EV manufacturers are notifiying customers to finalize their order before the new rules take effect.
<h3>Do Leased Electric Vehicles Qualify for Tax Credit?</h3>
The EV tax credit requirements will get stricter each year through 2026. By the time all rules go into effect, a large portion of electric vehicles will lose their eligibility. But there is an alternative to purchasing an EV to benefit from clean vehicle incentives.
If an electric vehicle is leased, most of the requirements for purchasing a vehicle may not apply. For instance, you could lease an EV made outside the US and still get a tax credit. The credit will be received by the dealer, not the person leasing the vehicle, but it is up to your leaser to pass the saving on to your payments.
Thanks to new rules, expensive electric vehicles like Lucid Air, and Tesla Model S may also benefit from tax credit if a customer chooses to lease instead of purchase.

Kontrolmatik, which carries out its battery activities under the brand of <a href="https://www.pomega.com/en/">Pomega Energy,</a> has received state incentives and has been entitled to benefit from two important supports: 35 dollars per kWh in battery cell production and 10 dollars per kWh in battery pack production within the scope of the USA&#8217;s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). With this support, it is estimated that until 2032, Kontrolmatik will receive more than $1 billion in incentives.
<h2>LFP to Produce Cathode Battery Cells</h2>
The Turkey-based battery manufacturer will produce battery cells with LFP cathodes in the USA as well as in the factory it has established in Ankara. LFP cells, which are preferred for energy storage solutions rather than electric vehicles, are frequently used in power plants due to both their cost advantage and their safety compared to NMC cells.
The first phase of the US plant will be completed in the second half of 2024 and production will begin. Stating that it will integrate its team in Turkey with the USA during the R&amp;D process, Kontrolmatik plans to start production in its Turkey factory in April 2023. When all three phases of the facility in Polatlı OSB are completed, the capacity will reach 2.25 GWh.
Kontrolmatik has not yet made a statement about the chemical structure, energy density, and areas of use of the battery cells it will produce. It will also build up energy storage units for renewable energy plants in Turkey. For now, installations using imported battery cells are expected to switch to domestically produced cells after 2023.

Kontrolmatik Establishes a Battery Factory in the USA with an Investment of 279 Million Dollars

Compass Mineral International has been starting to focus on extracting lithium more efficiently. The company is not only a leading supplier of essential minerals like salt and sulfate of potash used in plant fertilizer but also has made partnerships with Ford and LG Energy in supplying lithium.
Compass Mineral has doubled lithium extraction by developing a new technology to extract the minerals with minimal environmental impact. The company will continue to play a vital role in the industry as the major salt producer in North America and the UK.
The company has been active in the industry for almost two centuries and its revenue is exceeding $1 billion per year. The recent aim of the Compass Mineral is to diminish its reliance on weather-dependent minerals and to divert its focus toward the EV industry which has high growth potential.
Moreover, with the Inflation Reduction Act, the EV industry will grow even more with a tax credit of up to $7,500 on new and $4,000 on used EV purchases. Also, for an EV to qualify for the tax credit, 40% of its battery minerals must be sourced from the US or its free trade partners, which will rise to 80% after 2026.

This new situation creates a great opportunity for mineral suppliers like Compass Minerals to fulfill the increasing supply need. It is predicted that the demand for lithium to be used in batteries in North America will grow by 700% by 2025 and by 1,000% by 2030.
Because of the new incentives from the government and high prices, lithium extraction became more attractive. For this reason, the lithium project of Compass Minerals in Ogden, Utah is growing.  Also, the company has recently announced a significant breakthrough in the project.
Company Minerals will use the direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology of EnergySource Minerals so that they will have a minimal impact on the environment. The extracted minerals will fulfill the supply agreements between Compass Minerals and EV leaders, including Ford and LG Energy.

After three years of “extensive testing”, Compass Minerals decided to use the DLE technology of EnergySource Minerals because its proprietary ILiAD adsorption technology proved to be the most successful across four key combined assessment categories: lithium recovery; magnesium rejection; minimized environmental impact; and commercial readiness.
Chris Yandell, Head of Lithium at Compass Minerals, explains the logic behind this choice as follows:

The technology dramatically reduces the water footprint of operations, does not consume reagents, demonstrates order-of-magnitude longer operating life, and has the highest lithium recovery rates.
